What Are Dental Implants?
If you are missing one or more teeth, you can replace them with dental implants. Dental implants consist of three parts: the base, the abutment, and the crown. The actual implant consists of a titanium post or screw that is placed in the jawbone to act as a tooth root. This screw bonds with your jawbone to create a sturdy base for your tooth, or crown.
The crown is placed on top of the implant and is connected with an abutment. The crown is custom-made for your mouth. It is shaped and colored to match your other teeth. The result is an implant that looks and functions like a natural tooth.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
The dental implant process requires two separate surgeries. The first surgery involves inserting the base into the jawbone. The dentist accomplishes this by drilling a hole in the jawbone and screwing the base into the bone. The gum then heals around the implant.
You will not yet have the tooth. The tooth will be created through impressions and models of your mouth. The dentist will send these images to the lab to create a custom-made tooth tailored to your smile.
A second surgery will be scheduled to place the tooth once the base of the implant has sufficiently healed. This procedure entails placing the connector, or abutment, on top of the implant. The replacement tooth, or crown, is then placed on top and attached to the connector with a small screw and dental cement. Finally, your dentist will ensure your new tooth matches the color of your natural teeth.
The healing process begins. The jawbone becomes extra sturdy as it grows around the implanted metal post. This secures the implant into the jaw. The healing process can take as long as 12 weeks. While pain is minimal, you may experience some soreness afterward. Over-the-counter pain medications can minimize discomfort.
You now have a healthy new smile! You can now eat, smile and speak normally. Take care of your implants like you would your natural teeth by brushing and flossing daily. See your dentist for regular checkups and you’ll have a gorgeous smile for life.

Who Benefits from Dental Implants?
If you are missing anywhere from one tooth to all of your teeth, you can benefit from dental implants. Once you have completed all your facial development – which typically occurs at ages 16-18 – you can have dental implants.
Dental implants offer both health and cosmetic benefits. If you are missing teeth, getting implants will keep your facial muscles from sagging. They also prevent jawbone deterioration.
Dental implants can improve self-confidence. You will no longer feel embarrassed about smiling or talking. Implants look, feel and function like regular teeth, so you can eat your favorite foods without fear.
